When does a settled driveway qualify for leveling?
A driveway slab that has settled but is still structurally serviceable is a leveling candidate. The American Concrete Institute's 2010 field guide says slabjacking can raise a settled slab-on-ground or fill voids beneath it — and it is direct about the limits: lifting does not correct poor soil below, a slab that is still settling can settle again, and severely distressed or independently moving pieces keep replacement in the comparison.
What the provider weighs for a driveway specifically:
- Panel count and drop. How many panels moved and how far, measured at the joints with a straightedge.
- Cracking pattern. Hairline shrinkage cracks are different from a panel broken into pieces that rock under a tire.
- Binding. A slab pinned against the garage apron, the street, or an adjacent panel can refuse to move as intended.
- Drainage. If water runs toward the garage or house, target elevation and water path matter as much as the lift.
- Approach and right-of-way. Where the driveway meets the street, city rules can apply.
What does driveway leveling cost?
This site does not set or quote prices. For published context: HomeGuide's November 2025 national figures place mudjacking at $4–$9 per square foot, polyurethane foam at $8–$25 per square foot, and slab replacement at $6–$15 per square foot, and ACI's 2010 field guide says slabjacking is often less than half the cost of a new slab. The written quote for your driveway controls — square footage, void volume, access, method, and minimum charges all move the number.
Rockford permit rules that touch driveways
The City of Rockford says driveway permits are required when constructing or reconstructing driveways for one- and two-family properties, and curb cuts and sidewalks also require permits. Rockford's 2026 fee schedule lists one Driveway/Sidewalk/Curb Cut permit category: $79 for one- and two-family properties, or $106 for 3+ family, commercial, and industrial properties, plus $10 per foot of curb to be cut. A separate right-of-way permit is $55, and additional right-of-way charges may apply. The reviewed City pages do not expressly classify every private slab-lifting repair, so when work touches the approach, curb, sidewalk, right-of-way, or an unclear boundary, confirm with Construction and Development Services at 779-348-7174. Illinois law (220 ILCS 50) separately requires a JULIE locate request — call 811 — before drilling or excavation.
