Patios: the slope is the point
A patio that settled toward the house is more than a cosmetic problem — it changes where water goes. Raising a panel without understanding the grades can leave the water source unresolved or create a new low point. ACI's field guide covers the lifting mechanics, but the questions that decide a patio job are mostly about water: where do the downspouts discharge, where does the surface drain now, and what elevation should the finished slab actually sit at?
What the provider evaluates on a patio:
- Measured drop at each joint and against the house foundation line.
- Direction of surface drainage before and after the proposed lift.
- Joints against the house — a patio pinned under siding, a door threshold, or a step has a hard upper limit.
- Voids from washout, especially near downspouts.
Stoops are a different structure
Many front stoops are hollow or cantilevered structures rather than slabs poured on ground, and a settled stoop can also indicate backfill consolidation along the foundation. A slab-on-ground stoop may be a slabjacking candidate; a hollow stoop or one tied to the foundation needs a different evaluation. Describe what you see — separation from the house, a gap under the bottom step, doors that still operate normally — rather than assuming the repair.
If the building itself shows movement, say so when you call. A sunken exterior slab does not establish that the foundation is moving, and this site will not diagnose a foundation remotely.
